_{This is the first of two books on schooling and education. As the delivery of education through schooling systems has developed it may be difficult to recognize, differentiate and separate schooling from education. School systems have evolved from having education as the primary focus to putting much more emphasis on the schooling aspect.}

_{The Greek philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle placed all the emphasis on education, using dialogue, logic, discussion, question and answer and tales with a moral as the main means of teaching lateral thinking and imparting and receiving knowledge. Then, a group of learned philosophers known as Sophists established institutes of education. This started an elitist system of practical education. From these institutes of education schools evolved to the schooling/education system we have in the developed world today.}

_{With the development and construction of formal state schools, education with a schooling system came to be the primary arm of state control over its citizens. The state set the curriculum that suited its needs. As the evolutionary growth of schools progressed, colonization played a large part in the type of schooling and education sought and delivered by the colonizers.}

_{Today it is global trends and commerce that influence, and in many cases, dominate and dictate the education system. Schools have now become institutes of initiation into a global way of thinking, acting, behaving, and living.} 

_{I am not suggesting that we dispense with schooling, but that the system requires urgent review and modification. there is a greater emphasis on people working from home. Building structures will have to reflect that. Constructing office rooms is people’s homes and building less large office blocks may be the way forward.}

_{Less time spent in classrooms with smaller numbers  coupled with  more home, community and improved information technology approaches would reduce the schooling dimension and increase the education aspect.}
